Information security is not just concerned with all of the technical controls used for tracking and blocking hackers. It should be a holistic program based on a framework that includes many facets. Some of the less technical facets are a policy and governance structure and a security training program. Also, a method to assess and mitigate risk is important. This session will first present an overview of some of the fundamental principles of an information security program and will then dive deeper into analyzing risk management, including an overview of one way to perform risk assessments.

Scaling Up: Tools & Lessons Learned from Managing a 300-Student Technology Program
Yale's Student Technology Collaborative has grown by ~100 students and added 8 new public-facing centers in the past few years. This talk will cover our experiences handling the difficulties of rapid expansion and high management turnover; maintaining solid training and quality services with decreasing student-management face time; creating a student leadership force to train, manage, and recruit new student techs; and justifying the time and money costs of an educational, fun, student-community-driven program to a metrics- and service-focused IT organization. We'll also talk about homegrown automated tools we've developed to manage our students' shift scheduling, attendance, budgeting, and stats.

One App CAN Fit All: Comparing Tracking System Approaches for Larger and Smaller Schools
Saint Mary's College and Taylor University both use WebHelpDesk as a tracking system, but they have very different implementations based on the size of their Information Technology departments and the number of people who have access to the system on their campus. We will discuss the different ways both schools address similar issues and provide a brief overview of how to configure some of these features in WebHelpDesk. We will then summarize how these approaches have been successful and how our approaches might be improved.

Adding User Experience (UX) Testing with Students and Faculty Prior to Campus Website Updates
UI/UX Design and Development is the #1 hot IT job skill for 2016 (CIO.com). We will demonstrate how to create simple User Experience (UX) tests using Optimal Workshop software that result in improved website designs. Specifically, we will focus on the website's information architecture (IA), which allows students and faculty to more efficiently and effectively use the campus website to meet their needs. Then, we will describe and demonstrate how we incorporated UX design into the traditional campus website update process (using static wire framing tools such as Balsamiq and interactive rapid prototyping tools such as Axure RP 8 and inVision).

Changing Scheduling Solutions (or how to get an ulcer!)
After using a custom scheduling solution for 16 years, we were unable to continue developing and supporting it. In addition, due to infrastructure limitations, we were unable to utilize many features that we used to have, and that are now available in other solutions. Follow me through the tearing out of my hair (what hair I don't have) as we try to find a solution that fits all of our needs and as I find all of the aspects that turn out to be customized. Listen to my story of questionable customer service and give your feedback on the solutions you've found and get input for your next solution.

Improving WiFi Performance
What factors contribute most to improving WiFi performance? Is it signal quality, wireless technology, number of radios, spacial streams, device capability, or something else? In this session we present simulated and real-world testing of different factors that affect WiFi throughput. Explanations of the different performance factors will be explained during the presentation. The goal is to reaffirm your suspicions with hard evidence, teach you something you didn’t know about how WiFi performance works, and give you solid evidence on how to improve WiFi performance from a device level to a network level. While this is not an exhaustive list of all factors, many important factors will be included. This presentation is geared to anyone interested in WiFi, both network engineers and support technicians. It is highly technical, but explanations will be given throughout.

Centralized High Performance Computing at Wake Forest University
Wake Forest University's Distributed Environment for Academic Computing (DEAC) is a centrally funded, High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster that is available as a free resource for University faculty and students to conduct research. While many Universities have multiple HPC clusters that each support a singular department, the DEAC cluster singularly supports ~300 users across nine departments. Discussion will include a brief review of the cluster's sixteen year history, a high level overview of our funding model and it's resulting affect on our hardware architecture. Cluster usage, research software, and support tools will also be discussed as attendees are shown why this model has worked for Wake Forest. Attendees should have basic knowledge of HPC and will takeaway thoughts on policy and approach to research support at their institutions.
